For a long time, I asked myself one question on repeat.
Why did I get so sick?
I was dealing with Lyme disease, mold toxicity, chronic fatigue, MCAS, dysautonomia, gut issues, the full picture. I had spent years trying to get well. And somewhere underneath all the doctor’s appointments and protocols and hope and exhaustion was this haunting thought: what is wrong with my body? Why can’t I just be like a normal person?
If you’ve ever felt that way, this post is for you.
Because the answer to that question changed everything for me. And it’s probably not what you’ve been told.
It’s Not Your Body. It’s Your Internal Operating System.
Most people with chronic illness have heard one of two explanations for why they’re sick: either something is physically wrong that hasn’t been found yet, or their mindset needs to change.
Neither of these is quite right. And both leave people feeling either helpless or blamed.
What I’ve come to understand after my own decade of illness and years of working with thousands of people as a physical therapist and founder of Primal Trust, is that chronic illness often traces back to something deeper than either of those explanations. It traces back to an identity. A way of moving through the world.
Somewhere along the way, your whole system learned that life wasn’t safe. That you couldn’t trust things to work out. That it wasn’t okay to be fully yourself. Maybe this came from something obvious. like a trauma, a loss, an overwhelming experience. Or maybe it was subtler: growing up in an environment where you had to be careful, where love felt conditional, where your needs weren’t quite safe to express.
Whatever the source, when that becomes your internal operating system your nervous system responds accordingly.
Your symptoms aren’t your body malfunctioning. They’re your biology doing exactly what it was designed to do when it believes the world isn’t safe.Your immune system, endocrine system, digestion, pain response, all of it starts running from a place of threat.
What Your Symptoms Are Actually Communicating
Fatigue, brain fog, gut issues, pain, flare-ups, hypervigilance, insomnia, these are all tied together, nothing random or standing on it’s own, this is your body sending you messages in the way it was designed to.
The message is: there’s unresolved energy in here. Something that happened, that fear, rage, grief, or overwhelming moment your body couldn’t fully process, that never got to complete. Unfortunately, that energy doesn’t disappear. It stays in the body, reverberates through the system, and over time changes the way everything works.
As Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk’s work has shown us, the body keeps the score. The nervous system holds what the mind has tried to move past. And until that charge is resolved, the system stays in a state of low-grade defense.
This is also why unresolved stress changes the way the vagus nerve signals. It impacts immune function. It keeps cells stuck in what researcher Robert Naviaux calls the cell danger response, a survival mode where healing is paused because the body is too busy defending.
So while you have probably been told or shame yourself thinking you are just lazy, you need to snap out of it, or something is so strange about you, it’s actually quite the opposite. Your body is working incredibly hard, like overtime hard because it is still trying to protect you while it keeps functioning the best that it can. It’s waiting but it just hasn’t gotten the signal yet that it’s safe to stop.
Why Brain Retraining Alone Often Isn’t Enough
A lot of people in the chronic illness space have heard about brain retraining, programs that use neuroplasticity to retrain the brain’s threat response. And these tools are genuinely valuable. We use them here at Primal Trust.
But here’s what I’ve learned after taking thousands of people through healing:
If you’re trying to rewire your thoughts without also feeling what’s stored in your body, you’re building on sand.
The brain is still part of the body. Thought-level work alone such as visualization, positive reframes, interrupting patterns doesn’t reach the charge that’s held in the nervous system, the gut, the fascia, the breath. Those places don’t speak in thoughts. They speak in sensation, in impulse, in the felt sense of safety or danger.
This is the missing piece that most brain retraining programs don’t address. This is the reason that so many people do months of retraining and still feel stuck.
Real healing requires both: the top-down work of rewiring thought patterns AND the bottom-up work of learning to safely feel what the body has been holding.
Healing is not about fixing what’s broken. It’s about building the capacity to feel safe enough to repair. The Stress Bucket: How We End Up in a Crash
You might be wondering: if this has been building for years, why did I only get sick recently?
This is one of the most common questions I get. And the answer is the stress bucket.
Over time, suppressed emotion, inauthentic living, unresolved triggers, people-pleasing, pushing through, all of it accumulates. The nervous system adapts. You cope. You hold it together. But the programs running in the background are slowly getting worn down.
Until one day a mold exposure, an infection, a loss, a period of extreme stress hits and this is when the bucket finally overflows. And the body crashes.
It didn’t happen overnight. There was just a final tipping point.
Understanding this doesn’t mean blaming yourself for getting sick. It means understanding why chasing the tipping point trigger (the mold, the Lyme, the virus) often doesn’t lead to full healing. Because the bucket was already full. The trigger just made it overflow.

So if the root cause is this identity, this operating system of “I’m not safe” what does healing actually require?
It requires building the capacity to feel your feelings without running from them.
Not wallowing. Not reliving. Not forcing yourself to feel things before you’re ready. But gradually, safely, building the nervous system’s ability to be with discomfort without going into coping behaviors that shut the process down.
This is what vagus nerve toning supports. What somatic work helps with. What limbic system retraining addresses. And what trauma-informed parts work, the kind we do in Primal Trust completes.
When the nervous system finally gets the signal that it’s safe to feel, it allows your body to start switching things up. The vagus nerve starts signaling differently. Inflammation starts to decrease. Digestion starts to improve, sleep often becomes attainable after years of insomnia and restlessness and finally your energy steadily returns.
And more than the physical changes, something deeper shifts. There’s a sense of coming home to yourself. Of being okay not because everything is fixed, but because you finally feel safe inside your own body, a feeling that can’t really be put into words.
That is how the healing switch gets turned on.
Where to Start

A Final Word
There is a reason you got here. It’s not bad luck. It’s not a broken body. It’s a nervous system that learned, a long time ago, to protect you from a world that felt unsafe and has been doing that job faithfully ever since.
The path forward isn’t about fighting your body anymore, no more resisting the symptoms. It’s time to meet yourself, to release the grip and start helping your body learn something new.
That you are safe now. That it’s okay to rest. And that healing truly is possible, a deep cellular level.
I’ve lived this. Thousands of people inside the Primal Trust community have lived this. And I believe you can too.
With love,
Dr. Cat
